Cheltenham December meeting
by NRL Racing December 2010
The opening race on Friday saw REVE DE SIVOLA and SPIRIT RIVER as market leaders in the novice chase. Spirit River never travelled and had a crashing fall when well beaten at the time and I anticipate he will go back to hurdling at least for the rest of this season. Reve De Sivola won the horse race but wasn’t very impressed jumping sluggishly early on and will need to improve markedly if he wants his festival ambitions realised. The horse I take out of the race was WISHFUL THINKING, who came to a standstill to avoid a faller yet was only beaten 2 lengths.
The 3m listed chase saw a great battling performance by MIDNIGHT CHASE, whose brilliant young trainer is aiming at the Gold Cup now, and why not, he stays, loves Cheltenham and at 25/1 (6/1 a place ) should not be dismissed lightly.
Onto Saturday where the first race was won by WOOLECOMBE FOLLY, who travelled like a dream all race and won in a quicker time than MASTER MINDED later in the day, to earn him a tilt at the Champion Chase in March.
We certainly were treated on Saturday with both MASTER MINDED and TIME FOR RUPERT stamping there authority and at this stage the latter named should fear nothing heading towards the Sun Alliance. The big disappointment in the Tingle Creek was KALAHARI KING and whilst Ferdy Murphy's race horses are not running well, I feel there was something else as he was beaten at half way.
The December (sorry Vote AP) Gold Cup saw a great topweight performance from POQUELIN who will now be aimed at the Ryannair, however one horse was impressing me and travelling well before falling 3 out, so I will be watching for NOBLE ALAN next time.
The International Hurdle didn’t disappoint with a great performance from MENORAH, this horse has all the credentials of a champion and I would have him favourite at this stage. Whilst CUE CARD could finish only second, he lost nothing in defeat and will take all the beating in the Novice Hurdle, a route I believe he will and should take.
There was another horse I took out of the race who was having his first run in the UK and only beaten 11 lengths(giving 4lb) and I am saw trainer Evan Williams was pleased with the run of CRISTAL BONUS.
