Cheltenham Open Race Meeting 2010
by NRL Racing November 2010
There was some great racing over the weekend. And I have highlighted a few points as already the bookmakers are sharpening their pencils and producing their “books” for the Cheltenham festival.
There were alot of positives to take out of the meeting. But even though the festival is 4 months away, it doesn’t stop the bookies artificially shortening the prices of the star performers even though most of the horses didn’t run this week.
- CUE CARD - Highly impressive and deservedly hot favourite for the 2m novice, but 5/2 is much too short, he has to get there sound to start with.
- TIME FOR RUPERT - Very good performance, but we haven’t hardly seen any RSA contenders out yet in what is often a very competitive division, currently only 7/1 but the 12/1 offered by Blue Square is more like it.
- SAM WINNER - A really impressive winner in what on paper looked a strong race and 7/1 for the triumph looks a fair price.
- GHIZAO - Cosy winner of the novice chase but a fairly weak race in depth and with all the top potential Arkle candidates still to show their hand so 12/1 is a poor price considering ground conditions are likely to be against him.
- MENORAH - Followed in the footsteps of ROOSTER BOOSTER, very impressive under topweight and also won at Chelenham in March. I didn’t consider last years Champion hurdle the greatest so must have a live chance and 10/1 a fair price.
Always remember betting Ante Post means you don’t get your money back if they are non runners, there is nothing worse than not getting a run for your money. I do not bet AP very often as I feel you need to get twice , if not 3 times its possible SP to make it worthwhile. It is also never wise to bet straight after a big performance as the initial “Knee Jerk” reaction of Bookies sometimes fearful as the price you get will be too skinny.
DONT FOLLOW THE PACK, try to LEAD THE PACK.
Other horses to note without winning are:
POQUELIN, running a big race until the weight told and tiring close to home.
BESHABAR, never travelled but right in the thick of it until unluckily being brought down 2 out in the 3m novice chase.
OGEE, ran a big race for a long way on unfavourable ground.
RAJAMUND, unlucky faller at the last when challenging but short of room.
ANY GIVEN DAY, very solid performance behind the impressive MENORAH.
