Newbury review 25th to 27th November 2010
by NRL Racing November 2011
The 3 day Newbury meeting saw some great horse racing and as usual we saw some trusted performances and some potential stars in waiting.
Thursday saw to good novice chasers in FINIANS RAINBOW and AITEEN THIRTYTHREE. The former horse winning comfortably without being extended and quoted 10/1 for the Arkle, which although could prove to be a good bet, i couldn’t get interested on that one run. The former won well but the race was blighted by the fatal fall of Tell Massini.
On to Friday, we saw a juvenile horse of Alan King win impressively. Although getting 10lb from a dual winner, he did win well but I much prefer Sam Winner on what we have seen at this stage.Later we saw BARAFUNDLE win a competitive hurdle and I would expect about a 12lb rise which will make it harder in future and maybe novice chasing beckons.
Unfortunately another of Hendersons novice shasers SPIRIT RIVER fell, he was going exceptionally well at the time and had jumped well up to this point and i will be looking out for him next time. In the last the JP Mcmanus owned KID CASSIDY accelerated away from a useful field of novice hurdlers and must be short listed for one of the novices at Cheltenham.
Now on to super Saturday where first off we saw PEDDLARS CROSS an impressive winner of the hurdle. He looked fit, and was fit and can go on from here. BINOCULAR was disappointing and seems to be a spring horse but I would rather take 6/1 PEDDLARS CROSS than 4/1 BINOCULAR for the Champion.
BIG BUCKS had a comfortable introduction to the season and as yet there is nothing out there who could seriously challenge him. The World is often weak in depth maybe RESTLESS HARRY and shot in the dark RITES OF PASSAGE are worth looking out for.
Now onto the HENNESSY Gold Cup and what a race it was, and a great performance in defeat by DENMAN, Daryl Jacobs had DIAMOND HARRY in the right position from the off, and BURTON PORT proved his worth as well, but these two were both getting 26lb from DENMAN and I think 8/1 DENMAN for the gold cup is good value and better than 10/1 DIAMOND HARRY who disappointed at Cheltenham last season. I also understand BURTON PORT may go for the WELSH National and is currently 7/1, a bit skinny for me bearing mind he will be one of, if not the top weight.
There were other good racing performances, 3 that I noted were THE TOTHER ONE who ran on well despite losing position mid race and I think there is a big race in him possibly The Scottish National. HEY BIG SPENDER ran well for a long way and may be better suited to giving weight away to lesser lights, and finally CARRUTHERS, who comes up just short in this company but may be difficult to place in the right race.

More Horses to Watch Out for
AL FEROF (P.Nicholls) not beaten far by CUE
CARD giving 7lbs. A chaser in the making.
FRENCH OPERA (N.Henderson) great first season chasing, great jumper,
more to come.
OSCAS WHISKY (N.Henderson) not beaten far by MENORAH despite 2 out,
had slight set back. Watch out for in the New Year.
RITE OF PASSAGE (Ireland) Ascot Gold Cup winner and 2 big runs at
Cheltenham, could be interesting.
