WEEKEND RACING 20TH- 21st NOVEMBER 2010

This weekend some more great racing from Haydock, Ascot and Aintree with several of the leading fancies for Cheltenham in March on show.

Two the the weekends most decisive winners were in Competitive handicaps and both out quickly before their new handicap mark kicks in. Both GRAND CRUS and AEGEAN DAWN won emphatically and it is likely that both will be given revised marks over 20lbs higher.

Because of their lowly initial ratings this increase may still not be enough to stop them winning next time out.

Onto the big boys:

MASTER MINDED - great to see him back to his old self and despite a weak field, he was impressive and is rightly ahead of BIG ZEB for the Champion Chase betting.

ZAYNAR and to a lesser extent KARABAK both disappointing, RESTLESS HARRY despite running over too short a trip ran his race and will win when upped in trip, which puts SILVINIANO CONTI in at about 160,but not sure what route Paul nicholls will go.

CHARMINSTER - I have included this horse although not sure of the competition, quickened nicely and should have a bright future in the top bumpers.

IMPERIAL COMMANDER - won as he should, pity about WHAT A FRIEND who appeared to still have breathing problems. The proximity of TIDAL BAY who never travelled for 2 miles is a concern and I expect there to be a couple of other serious challengers to both IC and KAUTO STAR come march.

TOUBAB looked impressive but i often question form in 4 horse races especially when the hot favourite didn’t perform possibly just too many races in a month !, so will not be getting too excited just yet.

CLERKS CHOICE - ran no race and whilst wouldn’t totally write him off, it shows how cautious we should be of ratings based on one albeit excellent performance.

Sundays racing at Aintree didn’t throw much light on the Grand National scene but it was good to see FRANKIE FIGG prove that he can jump and old boy HELLO BUD winning the big one although surely at 13 he will be too old for the Grand National.

Finally just a quick word about Noel Fehily who rightfully is getting the plaudits he often deserves. Now he is regularly riding alot of decent stuff he cannot go wrong at present. In similar scenario to Wayne Hutchinson who is also proving his worth to Alan King in Choc Thorntons absence.

Both these jockeys are only riding these winners because of injuries to others!
Next week we have the Hennessey Gold Cup and Fighting fifth. Happy days !
